Thematic maps are a type of map or chart designed to show a particular theme connected with a specific geographic area. This Thematic maps is a color coded maps where different colors represent differences in the amount of crime in different jurisdictions. The following thematic map from Vermont Crime On-Line (VCON) depicts differences in overall reported crime by county. Counties with a lower number of crime incidents are depicted in blue while counties with a higher number of crimes are depicted in red. What makes this map a Thematic map is that it shows a particular theme (Crime) as related to a particular subject (Vermont).

Isoline maps use line symbols to portray a continuous distribution such as temperature or elevation. Isolines are lines that connect points of equal numeric value. Many metorologist use Isoline maps to quickly show temperature differences on maps with the hottest areas normally represented by the color red, the the warm areas by the color yellow, and the cold areas by the color blue. This map above shows the surface dew point temperature in the United States at a particular point in time. High dew point temperatures suggest areas that will consist of fog, the lower dew point ares suggest dry air which could lead to fire hazards for certain areas. The amount of water vapor that has consumed an area are represented , in this map, by the color red.

This map discribes the confirmed cases of the West Nile virus and its spread throughout the country. The map shows which states, in particular, are more prevalent to the outbreak. The cities situated closest to the Mississippi River, because of its swampy still waters, have the highest number of confirmed cases verses those further away as evident by the layout of the map.
